You Take Care of your Home

Being a homeowner means taking care of your home and fixing problems when they arise. But how often do certain problems in the house arise? If you’re like me than you don’t want to call someone when the caulk begins to crack, or you need to touch up a new set of paint or varnish an old piece of furniture. But at the same time, how often will you use the materials that help keep your house up to date?

The answer is: not that often. While it’s great to have the objects, so you don’t have to buy them repeatedly, you can save a lot more money if you just store them with the rest of your excess stuff.

How to store construction materials

store tools and equipmentProperly Secured – The first thing you need to do is make sure the items are properly secured. If you have paints, varnishes, caulk and you want to use them again in the next year, make sure they’re sealed. A helpful run or saran wrap can help if you’re in a bind.

Update that Inventory – When you store your belongings, update your inventory that you keep of the belongings in storage (read more about storage organization here.) Additionally, create a post-it note or tape a warning in your garage or storage room. If you are looking for the item, you might check the list and remember exactly where you put it!

Prioritize based on Yearly Usage – You don’t want to pop into storage like it’s a broom closet. So when you are storing your items, you should prioritize them based on frequency and remember that with a simple tagging method. Take a marker or a color coded tag and set them for times of the year, most often it’s seasoned. That way you’ll know what you should bring out during what times of year and you don’t have to think about them outside of year quarterly checkups.
